Speyside Big Three Whisky Tour: Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and The Macallan Distilleries

With around 50 in operation, Speyside is home to the highest concentration of whisky distilleries anywhere in the world. With such a large number in a relatively small area, this makes an ideal location to take a whisky tour. Whether you are a connoisseur or a novice, you can tailor this tour to meet with your preferences.

On this tour you will visit the three biggest distilleries on Speyside namely The Macallan, Glenfiddich, and Glenlivet. Each has a very different nature from the ultra-modern Macallan Distillery, to the very traditional Glenfiddich Distillery. At each you will have the opportunity to purchase one of their carefully selected whisky flights or, if you prefer, individual drams.

For lunch, the Glenfiddich Malt Barn is highly recommend and you can also sample the Balvenie Whisky range here too. You can also choose to go to either The Highlander Inn or The Mash Tun, both of which are also whisky bars.

How long you decide to spend in each, and whether you wish to take a tour at any of them is entirely your decision. To help you make the most of your day, Highland Day Tours recommends you choose one of the following options:

  • A tour at one distillery, followed by tastings at the other two, plus lunch at a whisky bar
  • A tour at The Macallan and Glenlivet with lunch at the Glenfiddich Malt Barn
  • A tour at Glenfiddich and Glenlivet with lunch at The Macallan Bistro
  • Tastings at the three distilleries plus lunch at a whisky bar

Other options are possible however in our experience choosing one of these options delivers the best overall experience for our guests. The choice however is yours!

Tour Options and DetailsOptions and Details

1. Glenlivet Distillery

The Glenlivet Distillery is the oldest distillery in the parish of Glenlivet. Founded in 1824, it is the largest producer of single malt whisky in Scotland with production of 21 million litres in 2018. Unlike many other distilleries, it has been in almost continuous production since it was founded, even through the Great Depression and Prohibition, with a shut down during World War II being the only break.

The Glenlivet brand is the USA’s biggest selling single malt whisky and second biggest selling single malt brand globally.

The Glenlivet offers a number of different tours, the most popular of which is their Classic Tour which lasts 75 minutes and costs £12.50. Tasting flights are also offered if you don’t wish to do a full tour.

2. Glenfiddich Distillery

Glenfiddich is in the middle of an upgrade which will see production expanded to 20 million litres per year. This upgrade is the result of the continued rise in global demand for the single malt, with Glenfiddich now accounting for 50% of the total sales by volume for the company.

Glenfiddich is historically significant as they became the first to systematically promote a single market globally including through television advertising. This ensured that Glenfiddich became the best-selling single malt globally, a position it retains today.

Glenfiddich runs tours on the hour between 10:00 and 16:00. There are a number of different tours, the most popular of which is the Explorer Tour which costs £10 per person and lasts 90 minutes.

Glenfiddich has a good bar and restaurant area serving a variety of well priced dishes. This is a good place to have lunch, and if you wish, you can also do a Balvenie Tasting Flight here too!

3. The Macallan Distillery

This distillery is like no other you have come across. It finally opened to the public in the summer of 2018 and initially caused traffic chaos with the police having to be called to restore calm. The distillery roof is shaped like five hills with meadow grass on the top.

One of these hills houses the new visitor centre complete with art gallery, and six different rooms that define the style of the Macallan single malt. A very impressive whisky wall showcases more than 400 bottles from the Macallan archive.

The Macallan Six Pillars Tour is the most popular tour offered, costing £15 and lasting around an hour. The Macallan Tours are usually booked up well in advance, however if it is not possible to do the tour, you can still wander around the impressive visitor centre and take in a whisky or two in their Linger Lounge.

4. The Mash Tun

This is a great whisky bar in the heart of Aberlour. Their whisky menu is more like a whisky bible in terms of size, and their whisky selection is no less impressive.

The Mash Tun has a range of food available from a full a la carte menu to a burgers and snacks type lunch menu.

5. The Highlander Inn

The Highlander Inn in Craigellachie has a huge range of local and global whisky for sale. Rightly famed for its collection, it also does a great pub style lunch at a competitive price.

6. The Malt Barn, Glenfiddich Distillery

The Glenfiddich Distillery has its own restaurant on site. Occupying the original distillery building, the restaurant offers a good range of tasty local produce complimented by a wide range of whiskies from the Grant family stable as well as wine and beer.
